COMMUNITY-SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE

Community Supported Agriculture farms (CSAs) were introduced in New England in 1986 as a new way to connect consumers and farmers in a mutually beneficial relationship. By joining a CSA, the consumer establishes a close relationship with a local farm, while bringing home a weekly supply of fresh, organic produce.

CSA members buy shares of a farm's harvest before the season begins. Then, from late spring through mid-fall or winter (or sometimes even year-round), CSA members receive a share of the farm's harvest, and also share in the risks. Members pick up their weekly share at the farm or at another distribution site. CSAs often welcome farm visits and may allow or encourage members to volunteer at the farm. Many also hold special events on the farm.

CSAs are growing in popularity due to the benefits they provide. CSA farmers are guaranteed income and working capital, and CSA members get fresh, organically grown food, and the experience of a working farm. Several of these listed farms do not follow a traditional CSA arrangement, but have instituted a modified subscription program. We encourage you to call around to various farms in your area to find a CSA that best matches your needs. Several other CSA farms exist within this region.
